- Eat early, as stalls pack up by 9 PM
- Look for Tai Dam and Akha snacks
Cycling the valley villages

- Rent bikes in town
- Ride to the Nam Dee waterfall and bamboo-paper village

A valley town near the Chinese border with a busy morning market and Akha villages in the hills.
- Visit the morning market early
- Trek with a local Akha guide
- Stay overnight to see the valley at dawn
Kayaking the Nam Ha

Day trips paddling downriver past forest and fishing villages.
- Best when water is high (July to November)
- Go with a guide who knows the rapids
- Keep valuables in a dry bag
Boten border & railway

The main crossing to China, with trains running south to Luang Prabang and Vientiane and north to Kunming.
- Book cross-border trains well ahead
- Carry your passport and visa
- Immigration is done at the stations
