What's on in Laos: October 2026 to May 2027

The end of Buddhist Lent, the That Luang Festival, Hmong New Year, Vat Phou and Pi Mai: the festivals worth planning a trip around, with confirmed dates where they exist.

Many Lao festivals follow the lunar calendar, so their dates move every year. Below are the events coming up over the next seven months, with the dates published by the Lao National Tourism Administration and the government where they exist. Where only the usual month is known, we say so. For a live list, see What's on in Laos on our Insights page.

Boun Ok Phansa: 25 to 27 October 2026

The end of Buddhist Lent. In Vientiane, monks chant before dawn on 26 October and alms are given at about seven in the morning; that evening brings candlelit processions and floating lights on the Mekong, and the city's longboat races run on the river during the festival. In Bolikhamxay Province, crowds wait on the riverbanks the same night for the naga fireballs.

Lai Heua Fai, Luang Prabang: 27 October 2026

Each village in the old royal capital builds an illuminated boat, parades it through town and floats it on the Mekong after dark. Book accommodation early and stay central, as roads close.

That Luang Festival: 21 to 24 November 2026

The country's largest religious festival, at the golden Pha That Luang stupa in Vientiane, with candlelit processions, mass alms giving and a trade fair.

Lao National Day: 2 December 2026

A public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, which matters if you are planning meetings.

Hmong New Year: about November to January

Celebrated after the harvest, village by village, with ball-tossing courtship games and new embroidered clothes. Phonsavan in Xieng Khouang hosts large gatherings.

Vat Phou Festival: February 2027

Pilgrims climb to the Khmer temple at Champasak at the full moon of the third lunar month. Dates are announced closer to the time.

Pi Mai Lao: 14 to 16 April 2027

Lao New Year, with water blessings, sand stupas and processions. It is busiest in Luang Prabang; book rooms months ahead and protect your phone.

Boun Bang Fai: May to June 2027

Villages launch home-made bamboo rockets to call for the rains before rice planting. Ask your guesthouse where it is happening.
